The National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (NSPCC) was founded in 1884 and is 141 years old.

What does NSPCC stand for?

  • To protect children from abuse and neglect.

  • Prevent abuse and neglect from happening.

  • Transform society through lobbying, changing laws, and by teaching all parents how to keep their children safe.

They do this by supporting Children and families most in need of help, because every child deserves the right to a safe and happy childhood

Here are some of the Services & Programmes provided by NSPCC

Childline

The UK’s Free, 24-hour helpline for children and young people. 0800 1111

Childline also has a website providing advice, support and a space for peer support on the message boards.

Childline service gives children and young people a voice when no one else is listening. Whatever problems or dangers they face, they give them somewhere to turn to for support when they need it!

On average a child contacts Childline every 45 seconds.

Last year they delivered over 160,000 counselling sessions to children and young people. Its incredible that they were able to reach that many children who needed them.

Childline counsellors are trained to make young people feel heard, empower them to make positive changes, and safeguard them against abuse or neglect.

What happens when you contact Childline?

Speak Out Stay Safe

Speak Out, Stay Safe is a safeguarding programme for children aged 5 to 11-years-old. It is a universal, preventative offer to all children of primary school age in the UK and Channel Islands.

It helps children understand:

  • Abuse in all its forms and how to recognise the signs of abuse

  • That abuse is never a child's fault, and they have the right to be safe

  • Where to get help and the sources of help available to them, including Childline services

Their ASSEMBELIES, RESOURCES AND WORKSHOPS support children to feel empowered – knowing how they can speak out and stay safe and children will know they have the right to:

  • Speak out and have their views taken seriously

  • Be kept safe

  • Get help when they need it

The NSPCC Helpline

Sometimes it can be difficult to tell if a child is suffering abuse. The NSPCC helpline is for any adult who has concerns about a child’s safety or wellbeing.

It doesn’t have to be an emergency - someone might be looking for guidance and support on issues affecting children. Whatever it is, their dedicated child protection specialists will be able to advise and take any necessary action.

The Helpline operates Monday-Friday but can be contacted by email  24/7.

On average, almost 200 worried adults a day call the Helpline about children who desperately need protecting.

The helpline responded to almost 70,000 contacts last year from people with concerns about a child's welfare. Last year almost 20,000 contacts to the Helpline resulted in a referral to external agencies.

Online Safety

Every child deserves to be safe and happy, and the internet offers them an exciting world of learning and friendship. But right now, more and more children are at risk.

In the last 6 years, online grooming crimes against children in the UK has risen by 89%.

We know that young people are most at risk of being bullied, exploited and groomed online.

NSPCC has dedicated volunteer counsellor's available day and night to provide confidential counselling sessions to children through Childline.

The NSPCC local campaigns team leads on the delivery of online safety webinars and workshops to help communities keep children safe.

NSPCC want to help everyone – parents, families, professionals, volunteers, agencies and organisations – to feel confident, empowered and informed about safeguarding children online.
